To people who have never blowed in a wind instrument (and to the others)

The Tuft, the only interactive brass band for non-musicians !

The Tuft is a worldwide brass band on 5 points :
1° it is a meeting between ancient wind instruments which have each their history, and the collective breath of the present brought by the participants
2° it is aimed first and foremost to 50 non-musicians having never practised a wind instrument and of course, to musicians to whom it will be asked to choose an other instrument
3) it recruits every individual from 7 to 77 years old (and even more, it already occurred !)
4° it gathers all social categories (some mayors marched in the tuft, but also schools, musical lovers, professionals, districts' inhabitants, social workers, members of leisure centres, tourists, festival-goers)
5° it crossed France, Italy, Belgium, Africa, Turkey ...
In the Tuft brass band, involvers are mobilized on 3 stages :
1) discovery of instruments brought on the spot by the Tuft Team
2) one-two hours of rehearsal, including various exercises supervised by Fabrice Charles, solo trombone and brass band's leader, assisted by 4 soloists : Michel Doneda (saxophone), Lê Quan Ninh (percussions), Ly Thanh Tiên (poetry, trumpet, dance) and Michel Mathieu (theater)
3) one or several parades in "all-tuft" in the streets of the city, the district, the village ...

The Tuft is an artistic and educational meeting, inscribed in the space of everyday life or holiday, a POETIC ACT improvised with music, poems, dance and burlesque theater.
One day of intervention in a feast, a festival, a public meeting or a complete brass band residence,in relation with educational or artistic authorities, lasting from several days to several weeks or months : such is one of both possible formulas to associate a public to various cultural, artistic, sporty, associative, rural, institutional events.

A main point for the organizer who greets our project : the Tuft needs an upstream work of recruitment, operated long time in advance, in the very interest of the event : of course, the more there will be blowers, the more sound and spectacular phenomenons will be amazing.
A model of recruitment's poster is available in page "Recruitment's poster" edited below, it can be reworked at will, following the full knowledge of the public from the organizer.
A list including names of the participants must be imperatively given to the artists, in the very moment of their arrival.

The Tuft-Team

  • Fabrice Charles : leader of the brass band ans solo trombone, first prize of conservatoire de Metz, he teaches in National school of Music of Aurillac and plays in numerous international festivals
  • Michel Doneda : soprano saxophonist, he played first in Municipal Harmony of Brive, then on stages of France, Japan and America as soloist and in concerts' groups
  • Lê Quan Ninh : percussionist, first prize of Conservatoire de Versailles, he is a member of Quatuor Hélios (contemporary music), plays improvised music all around the world
  • Ly Thanh Tiên : self-learner poet, musician and dancer, he made hundred spectacles in music events, poetry, dance, plastic and visual arts.
  • Michel Mathieu : actor and director of Théâtre2 l'Acte, he is performer, plastics technician on stage and street theater.

The music does not belong any more to the technique, the pleasure to the relentless worker of valve and breath. The brass band becomes a raw sound, meets noise, shout and especially an immense moment of shared pleasure and (re)creation). Each "Tuft" is thus an unique and original event. As the first immediate brass band existing in the world, The "Tuft" produces true non-music made by true non-musicians. Reserved to all who dreamed to walk in procession without running away ! Music or not, it is played by all.
